2001 Petrus

By Chateau Petrus

2001 Petrus from Château Petrus, Pomerol, Bordeaux

In the pantheon of fine wines, the 2001 Petrus from Château Petrus asserts its prestige with a remarkable vintage that articulates the exceptional conditions of Pomerol in that year. Enticing collectors and oenophiles alike, this transcendent pour demands attention with its unique attributes set apart from its siblings.

A Vintage Defined by Balance and Elegance

The 2001 vintage was not without its challenges in Bordeaux; however, the merlot-dominated clay of Petrus' vineyards in Pomerol endured to produce grapes of concentrated opulence balanced with unanticipated finesse. The weather graced the region with a relatively dry August and September following a wet spring, which allowed for optimal ripeness and health of the fruit.

The 2001 Petrus showcases an intricate mélange of black cherry and truffle, a nod to the quintessential character of Pomerol merlot when it whispers the tales of its terroir. On the palate, one is greeted with an ensemble of ripe tannins that have mellowed gracefully over time, ensuring a seamless structure that supports the wine's enduring complexity.

An Admirable Candidate for Wine Investment

With age, the initially reserved 2001 vintage has unfurled into a testimony of why wine investment portfolios prize the inclusion of Château Petrus. The careful vinification, coupled with the estate’s legendary perfectionism, renders this vintage not just a spectacular drinking experience but also a prudent addition to any connoisseur’s cache.

The 2001 Petrus from Château Petrus is a profound expression from a year where elegance took center stage amidst formidable counterparts. It sits comfortably in maturity now, with each sip affirming why it’s revered amongst connoisseurs looking to diversify their investment with authentic excellence – an offering from Pomerol that outshines expectations and continues to achieve distinction in both bouquet and value.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On horizontal. There is stunning sense of definition and mineralite on the nose: blackberry, wild hedgerow, crushed stone and just a faint hint of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, superb backbone here, a wine built for the long-term. Dark broody, leather tinged fruit, a touch of orange zest and small red cherries which can to more prominence

The 2001 Petrus (2,160 cases produced) exhibits more depth and richness than any other Pomerol I tasted. Its deep saturated ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by a tight but promising bouquet of vanilla, cherry liqueur, melted licorice, black currants, and notions of truffles and earth. Rich, full-bodied, and surprisingly thick as well as intense, there is plenty of structure underlying the wealth of fruit and extract. Give it 3-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following two decades as it promises to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage, not to mention one of the most concentrated. I told Christian Moueix (although I’m not sure he agreed with me) that his best wines of 2001 reminded me of the 1971s in style, but with slightly less tannin and more fat.
