Artisanal Mastery in a Challenging Vintage

The 2004 harvest in Pomerol was not without its trials; Mother Nature tested the might of winemakers with a vintage initially marked by dampness and moderate temperatures. However, through meticulous vineyard management and the application of impeccable savoir-faire, Chateau Vieux Ch. Certan transcended these conditions to manifest a wine of captivating complexity and finesse.

An Emblem of Sophistication

Nuanced by an autumnal exhalation between September and October which offered respite and balance, the 2004 Vieux Ch. Certan exhibits an aromatic profile blending ripe cherries and blackberries with an enchanting undercurrent of truffle and earth - quintessentially Pomerol. On the palate, this vintage distinguished itself with velvety tannins that unfold over layers of subtly smoked cassis and spice, culminating in a long and steadfast finish.

The embodiment of thoughtful winemaking mastery, this wine resonates with those who appreciate vigour paired with elegance in their Bordeaux selections. Rigorous selection processes at harvest ensured that only grapes conveying optimal maturity contributed to this blend, underscoring the vintage's potential for longevity and rewarding patient collectors.

In conclusion, while paying tribute to its provenance, the 2004 Vieux Ch. Certan continues to allure connoisseurs who discern not only the serene power of its Pomerol heritage but also acknowledge its investment-worthy poise. This particular vintage is evidence that even in years facing climatic uncertainties, Chateau Vieux Ch. Certan is unswerving in crafting wines that are both a delight to the senses and a credit to collections of fine wines.

Tasted at the Bipin Desai’s VCC vertical in Los Angeles. This is a triumph of wine over vintage: Alexandre Thienpont having to pass through the vineyard six times in order to pick the grapes. It was worthwhile because this is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage, driven by the Cabernet Franc (30%). A delectable nose with wonderful purity and exuberant, peppery Cabernet Franc with touches of tar and roasted chestnuts inflected the black fruits. The palate is medium-bodied, very good weight, almost sinewy in fact, with vibrant acidity and a slight hardness on the finish that should melt away with time. It has a relatively dry finish, which leaves the palate eager for the next sip and improving all the time in my glass so that the final dregs are the finest. Superb. Drink 2015-2030+. Tasted November 2008.

This stunning blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, roasted herbs, smoke, and cassis. Elegant, medium to full-bodied, pure flavors reveal moderately high tannin, but superb concentration and richness. Vieux Chateau Certan should be one of the longer-lived and most complex wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
