2007 Angelus

By Chateau Angelus

2007 Angelus from Chateau Angelus, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

In the pantheon of Bordeaux estates, Chateau Angelus commands a regal presence, much like the storied town of Saint-Emilion from which it hails. The 2007 Angelus from Chateau Angelus, while not hailed at its birth as the most illustrious of its lineage, has matured with a grace that could only be sculpted by the hands of time and terroir.

Complexity Built By Vintage Variation

The year 2007 was marked by climatic caprice, where Bordeaux faced a challenging growing season leading to an early harvest. The meticulous care of Chateau Angelus mitigated Mother Nature's whims, culminating in a wine that reflects both the adversity and expertise woven into its creation. This vintage whispers tales of perseverance through its complex layers.

A Vivid Reflection of the Year

Championing resilience, the 2007 Angelus deftly balances mature tannins with a symphony of dark fruit notes and a subtle hint of truffle – a testament to its evolution. Hovering on the palate are whispers of cigar box and leather, evoking images of antique-laden chateaus perched upon limestone escarpments. It is undoubtedly an intriguing investment piece, particularly for collectors favouring vintages that speak volumes of their origin year.

Investors in fine wine will appreciate the 2007 Angelus not merely for its rarity but also for how opulently it has come into its own. As with many wines that counter initial skepticism with unparalleled charm post maturation, this vintage stands firmly as one worth revisiting and perfectly complements a refined portfolio.

An Investment Worth Savouring

In conclusion, the steadfast performance and enticing intricacy of this wine cannot be overstated. Nurtured by an estate revered for crafting wines of exceptional character, the 2007 Angelus from Chateau Angelus exemplifies how perceived underdog vintages can soar beyond expectations to become treasures within any esteemed collection.

This is a clean wine with a currant, berry and spicy character. Full body with soft tannins and a cherry, sweet tobacco and mineral undertone. Drink now.

A super effort from proprietor Hubert de Bouard, this blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc exhibits sweet notes of chocolate, charcoal, blackberries, and jammy cherries in its round, opulent, fleshy personality. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine achieved 13.5% natural alcohol. Low acidity and ripe tannin make for a voluptuous style of Angelus to drink now and over the next 10-15 years.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Angelus has a really quite wonderful bouquet with dark cherries, crushed strawberry, hints of orange blossom and cedar that contain much more energy than many of its peers. The palate is very crisp and nicely structured on the entry. The acidity is very well judged, and there is a sense of effortless charm in the silky smooth, lightly spiced finish. Everything here is just ticking along nicely. Excellent. Tasted February 2017.

Tasted at Farr Vintners' vertical from ex-chateau magnum. The 2007 has a slightly lighter colour than the 2008 and 2009. I appreciate the bouquet, lighter compared to more recent vintages with raspberry, cranberry sauce and a background tinny accent. Very nice purity here, the Merlot stronger than the Cabernet Franc at the moment and it unfurls nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity on the entry. It is a little angular compared to bottles that I have tasted, but it is very fresh in the mouth with admirable fruit concentration considering the vintage. It does not have a great length, cutting away quite sharply on the spicy finish with residues of burnt toast, so not a long-term vintage but very fine. Tasted October 2011.
