2011 Angelus
By Chateau Angelus
The 2011 Angelus from Chateau Angelus, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux
The year 2011 presented Bordeaux with a vintage of capricious charm, one which, despite being sandwiched between the legendary 2009 and 2010 vintages, demands respect on its own merits. The 2011 Angelus from Chateau Angelus bears testimony to the estate's adroit handling of such an enigmatic year. As a wine critic devoted to unearthing the intrinsic narrative of every bottle, I find the 2011 offering narrating a tale of resilience and finesse.
A Vintage Striving for Balance
The climatic odyssey of 2011 brought with it fears and surprises alike – starting with an unusually warm spring that spurred early flowering, and culminating in a summer whose generosity was measured. It was a year where careful vineyard stewardship was paramount, and the expert team at Chateau Angelus exhibited their virtues through diligent viticulture and astute selection.
Composed with a blend that favours Merlot slightly over Cabernet Franc, the 2011 Angelus manifests its pedigree through a complex bouquet of ripe black fruits and an underpinning of truffle and licorice. These aromas lend an aristocratic poise that marries exquisitely with the structured yet supple tannins derived from its maturation in new oak barrels – a hallmark technique which this estate has mastered over time.
Investment-Worthy Terroir Expression
Those investing in fine wines will appreciate the 2011 vintage for its early approachability and promise of evolution. As it stands today, the wine exhibits an impressive balance that allows those with patience to anticipate further unfolding of its character.
In an era where immediacy often trumps anticipation, the 2011 Angelus from Chateau Angelus assures investors and aficionados alike of its merit – a sterling embodiment of Saint-Emilion terroir translated through a challenging year, ready to be unravelled given due time or enjoyed in its current state of poised elegance.
To sum up, the nuanced crafting behind the 2011 Angelus from Chateau Angelus resonates deeply with those who seek to discern the story in every vintage. It stands as a testament to skilful winemaking that harnesses the unpredictability of nature into fine wine investment gold. This particular vintage encapsulates not merely the quintessence of Chateau Angelus but also encapsulates the tenacity of Bordeaux’s spirit during a formidable season.

James Suckling - jamessuckling.com, February 20th 2014
The 2011 Angelus is another winner from Hubert de Bouard. Supple and sexy with lots of blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with licorice, barbecue smoke and camphor, this medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, sexy effort offers delicious drinking now, and promises to become even better over the next decade. It should keep for 15 or more years.
Robert Parker Jr - The Wine Advocate, 29 April 2014
The 2011 is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. There is a lot of maceration evident on the dense, broody bouquet with scents of blackberry and mulberry. It is missing the sheer exuberance of the previous two vintages and comes across as a little sullen by comparison. The palate is smooth and harmonious on the entry with tightly knit tannins and well-integrated oak. There is admirable focus here and the finish is strong, almost sinewy. The persistency is impressive, although it will hopefully develop more finesse by the time of bottling. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Tasted April 2012.
