The 2006 vintage from the storied cellars of Chateau Ausone stands as a testament to a year that threw both challenges and opportunities to the vintners of Saint-Emilion. A Decisive Year for Enthusiasts and Investors Alike
Investors and connoisseurs often recognize Chateau Ausone as a paragon of vinous excellence. The 2006 Chapelle d'Ausone, the estate's illustrious second wine, echoes this sentiment with its own distinctive flair. Captivating nuances in this particular vintage are born from variable conditions — a cooler-than-average growing season followed by a warm September — which allowed for a slower yet full maturation of the grapes.
The Character of the 2006 Vintage
A wine that intrigues with complexity, the 2006 Chapelle d'Ausone evokes refined notes of cassis, plum, and a subtle hint of tobacco—a medley braced by elegant tannins that whisper tales of terroir and meticulous vinification. Earthy undertones interlace with ripe berries; these harmonious flavours having been preserved and enhanced throughout an exemplary ageing process.
The enduring freshness pairs with an opulent structure, connecting investors to an experience unique to this specific year. While some vintages soar in flamboyance, the 2006 vintage takes pride in its poise — a robust offering without forsaking grace.
Delving into investment considerations, the 2006 Chapelle d'Ausone emerges as not only an enticing drinking prospect but also as one to watch in the markets. Its distinction, heritage, and story contribute to its status as an investment piece in fine wine portfolios.
To encapsulate, the 2006 Chapelle d'Ausone is a compelling embodiment of winemaking craftsmanship set against the backdrop of Saint-Emilion’s historic terroirs. Its provenance from Chateau Ausone brings an assurance of quality and potential for growth—two essential attributes for any discerning investor.

Scores and tasting notes
There are only 6000 bottles (representing 25% of the total production) of Ausone’s delicious second wine, the 2006 La Chapelle d’Ausone. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, crushed rocks, creme de cassis, and hints of boysenberries as well as blueberries. With medium to full body, and stunning concentration, purity, and texture, it should drink well in 3-5 years, and last for two decades. As I wrote last year, today Ausone’s second wine is dramatically better than most first wines made in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s under the previous administration.

Tasted blind at Southwold '06 Bordeaux tasting. This is reserved on the nose, a little introverted but good definition, blackberry leaf, a touch of oyster shell and boysenberry. The palate is dense, chewy tannins, black dusky fruit, a touch of fruitcake and spice, dense and introverted on the finish but good length. It lacks a little breeding, but is well made. Tasted January 2010.
