By Chateau Beausejour

2012 Beausejour Duffau-Lagarosse, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France

The 2012 vintage of the esteemed Beausejour Duffau-Lagarosse from Chateau Beausejour Duffau-Lagarrosse resonates with the intrigue of a truly climatically challenged year in the Bordeaux region. The Saint-Émilion's formidable response to the year’s erratic weather has, intriguingly, crafted a wine of exceptional character that captures the resilient spirit of its terroir.

Climatic Challenges Transformed into Vinous Triumphs

The inconsistent climate of 2012 presented both promise and peril; early optimism was threatened by bouts of moisture and cooler spells, yet ultimately, an Indian summer saved the day, coalescing grapes with concentrated maturity. The diligent vintners at Chateau Beausejour Duffau-Lagarrosse harnessed this peculiarity with artful precision.

A Vintage Defined by Its Individuality

This specific vintage imparts to the 2012 Beausejour Duffau-Lagarosse a profile distinctly its own—ushering in an expression that is robust yet marked by an underlying deft touch. With eloquence, the wine radiates deep ruby hues, while olfactory nuances suggest dark cherries intertwined with earthy whispers—a testimony to its poised ageing process.

A tasting reveals layers: starting with a classic Saint-Émilion plushness, followed by an assemblage of ripe tannins and plums. There is a wonderful dichotomy at play—this wine exhibits muscular structure alongside elegant notes of spice and mineral undertones, hinting at the meticulous alchemy achieved by its creators amidst 2012's vicissitudes.

For cultured investors with a discerning palate, seeking out this singular edition of Beausejour Duffau-Lagarosse proffers not only aesthetic reward but also a unique narrative piece within their collections. It stands as empirical evidence that the most nuanced vintages are born from overcoming adversity.

In summary, the 2012 Beausejour Duffau-Lagarosse epitomises how Bordeaux's vintners adapt masterfully to challenges—a theme quite prevalent across terroirs globally. A wine such as this, nurtured to excellence by Chateau Beausejour Duffau-Lagarrosse, is far more than mere investment; it's a testament to perseverance and finesse in the marvellous symphony that is winemaking.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Beausejour Duffau Lagarosse has a dense, slightly broody but well-defined bouquet with scents of blackberry, cedar and tobacco, lending it a Left Bank-like personality. In fact, I found this reminiscent of (modern) Château Figeac! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity, structured and a little masculine, but don't worry, there is sufficient fruit here to please any Saint Emilion lover. The finish is harmonious and refined. A bright future lies ahead. Tasted January 2016.
