By Chateau Cheval Blanc
1999 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
In the tapestry of Bordeaux's vintages, the 1999 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc unfurls with an elegant subtlety that sets it distinctively apart. This vintage occupies a space which vivaciously alerts the senses, a testament to the château’s consistency in crafting approachable wines that still speak of their esteemed lineage.
Meticulous blend, singular personality
The year 1999 did not possess the climatic drama of its immediate predecessors; its narrative was one of steady development, an echo of classical restraint. Yet, within this somewhat unassuming context, emerges the 1999 Le Petit Cheval. Its engaging composition—a meticulous blend primarily consisting of Merlot—demurely contrasts the more exuberant expressions of other vintages. In maturity, this wine presents nuanced harmonies of ripe cherry and subtle oak softened by time, profoundly evincing a poised complexity.
An investor’s serenade
For those with astute insight on wine investment and a penchant for unearthing gems poised for incremental appreciation, the 1999 Le Petit Cheval is an articulate choice. Its inherent balance and integration suggest a wine not at the twilight of its life but one in gentle ascent into mellowness.
Its palate persists with grace, offering layers of evolved fruit interwoven with tertiary notes of leather and earth—a murmured promise rather than a boisterous claim. This Le Petit Cheval caresses the palate more than it commands it—revealing in its refinement an alluring option for diversifying one's portfolio.
As investors seek to navigate the intricacies of Bordeaux’s vintages, the 1999 Le Petit Cheval remains one worthy of contemplation. It encapsulates an era in Saint-Émilion where poise was prized over power—a vintage carved from a quieter sort of excellence that warrants our sincere attention and respect as a collectible in its own right.

Scores and tasting notes
A muted nose that seem rather dry and hollow. The palate is one-dimensional with redcurrant and cranberry notes. Quite tough on the mid-palate with a slightly dilute finish. I don't think this is a great Second Wine. Tasted November 2003.
