1995 d'Yquem

By Chateau d'Yquem

1995 d'Yquem from Chateau d'Yquem, Sauternes, Bordeaux

In the canon of liquid luxury, few wines stir the soul quite like those of Chateau d'Yquem. The 1995 vintage, in particular, presents a fascinating chapter in the chateau's illustrious history. My extensive experience with Yquem's extensive oeuvre allows me to assert that the 1995 d'Yquem captures an exquisite moment in enological time. Balanced by nature's benevolence and human expertise, it stands as a testament to the Sauternes appellation's ability to produce nectarous wines of extraordinary longevity and poise.

A Distinct Expression of Time and Terroir

The growing season leading up to the harvest of 1995 was one that issued both challenge and bounty. Mildew pressures were brilliantly navigated, giving way to an autumn conducive to the noble rot necessary for concentrating the succulent flavours within. This careful dance with nature culminated in a wine shimmering with the complexity only such trials can instil.

Upon tasting, one finds that the 1995 d'Yquem delivers opulent layers of apricot, honeyed fig, and toasted almond on a sumptuous yet impeccably balanced palate. There is a linearity here driven by vibrant acidity, ensuring each sip resonates with fresh appeal even as it matures gracefully in the bottle.

An Inviting Candidate for Fine Wine Investment

For enthusiasts and investors alike looking for depth and distinction in their portfolios, the 1995 d'Yquem is a compelling inclusion. Its multifaceted character offers both immediate gratification and potential for continued evolution—a dual promise that holds sway over connoisseurs who appreciate wines that stand as an exquisite reflection of their unique year.

As it continues its journey through maturity, the 1995 d'Yquem reveals more of its stratified intricacies with each passing year. It’s these qualities that fortify its standing as a jewel among Sauternes, imbuing it with the rareness desired by serious collectors. One savours not merely a sublime elixir but an artefact of viticultural deftness and passion—indeed, a touchstone for what can be achieved by Chateau d’Yquem under Bordeaux’s graceful skies.

Tasted at the chateau. O.K. - I think this is better than the 1990! Intense hue. Brilliant expressive apricot/orangey nose with tonnes of botrytis. Unctuous and fat. Slightly lower in acidity than other vintages. Very concentrated with an incredibly intense finish. Tasted July 2001.

Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1995 Chateau d’Yquem is moving into its secondary aroma phase. A deep golden color, it has a dense and almost Barsac-like bouquet with tangerine, apricot, acacia and melted candle wax. It displays good intensity, unfolding beautifully in the glass. The palate has a strident opening, with a slight bitter edge that lends this Yquem great tension. One can discern layers of marmalade infused with honey fruit, with a powerful, spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is drinking perfectly now, but will surely age with style over many years. Tasted March 2014.
