2005 Rieussec
By Chateau Rieussec
The 2005 Rieussec from Chateau Rieussec, Sauternes, Bordeaux
The 2005 Rieussec from the distinguished Chateau Rieussec stands as a monumental embodiment of the Sauternes appellation in a year which many aficionados believe to be amongst the finest in recent memory. Navigating the annals of vintages within this illustrious region, the year 2005 shines brightly, marked by its climatic grace and the gifted hands that sculpted its fruits.
Unique Expressions of an Exemplary Year
Cherished for its climatic benevolence, 2005 bestowed upon us wines with both concentration and elegance. A dry spring followed by a hot summer set the stage for optimal noble rot development, crucial in crafting the luscious complexity Sauternes lovers crave. The coolness of autumn evenings then descended, enshrining high levels of acidity that serve as a grand counterpoint to the rich botrytis-laden sweetness.
The 2005 Rieussec reveals layers that unfold with an almost regal poise. With aromas hinting at honeysuckle, candied apricot and ginger, the bouquet itself warrants investment. On the palate, one discovers a tapestry rich with marmalade, beeswax, and a zestful citrus vivacity. This darling of Chateau Rieussec has managed to remain impeccably balanced despite its unassailable concentration—a testament to terroir and time.
A Vintage Worthy of Ascribed Distinction—and Investment
As a wine critic heralding vintages that exude class and potential for accrual in worth, I view the 2005 Rieussec from Chateau Rieussec as one of those singular offerings that savvy investors should note with particular interest. It promises not only sensory joy to those who uncork it but also stands as a prized asset in any discerning investor's collection.
In summing this liquid treasure—let it be said—the 2005 Rieussec is irrefutably a crown jewel in the realm of fine wines. Its superb balance, striking aromatic profile and rich palate denote more than just an exceptional Sauternes; they represent an opportunity for investors to own part of a storied vintage that has been nurtured to near perfection by both Mother Nature and vintner's artistry alike.

The 2005 Rieussec is a blend of 90% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle picked between 23 September and 27 October. It has a fabulous bouquet that is mineral-rich and tensile. The palate repeats its performance from last year: focused, tense, laden with botrytis-rich fruit with a crystalline and sorbet-fresh finish that seals the deal. One of the best releases from the estate in recent years. Tasted April 2016.

What a balance in this wine, notes of apple pie, honey, and spiced lemons. Full-bodied and sweet, with a bright acidity and dried citrus with honey and orange marmalade. 140 grams of residual sugar, but very fresh still. Beautiful now, but wait to pull the cork in 2012.

Tasted blind at The Arches. The Rieussec 2005 has a luscious creamy, vanilla-tinged bouquet with touches of honeycomb and almond, the oak noticeable even after several years of bottle age. The palate has a viscous entry with an attractive fatness in the mouth. There is clearly a lot of botrytis here and it delivers layers of almond, custard creams, honey and quince that build to an almost Yquem-like finish. Having tasted the 2001 Rieussec just a few days previously, the 2005 is the better Sauternes, especially with its clean, wonderfully focused finish. Excellent. Tasted February 2012.
