Those discerning collectors who seek out Bordeaux wines with a story to tell will find the 2004 vintage a compelling chapter in the illustrious annals of St-Estephe.
A Vintage Steeped in Elegance
The year 2004 took a gracious bow following the scorching spectacle that was 2003. The growing season in Bordeaux saw an orchestration of optimal conditions, leading to grapes that achieved impeccable balance, flirting with ripeness yet retaining an almost Austere edge. The wines from this vintage have been lauded for their striking elegance and potential for maturation, traits that are markedly evident in the 2004 Cos d'Estournel.
Finesse and Structure: An Astute Investment
Indeed, afficionados will appreciate the poised structure of this wine; it is a testament to its robust Cabernet Sauvignon backbone, which meshes harmoniously with Merlot's sumptuous fruitfulness. Notes of cassis and blackberry delineate the flavour profile, accompanied by an earthy truffle essence and a touch of spice that allude to the slightest kiss of oak - an approach that resonates admirably with fine wine investors focusing on both pedigree and complexity.
Decanting the Investment Potential
As a wine critic who has traversed the best part of four decades chronicling liquid treasures like these, I perceive immense value in investing in such meticulously crafted vintages. The 2004 Cos d'Estournel stands as a testament to the year's ambient climate dynamics and meticulous vineyard management, which culminate in this liquid tableau. It is a wine whose narrative is woven from vine to bottle—a narrative that positions it as one of the more intriguing opportunities for investment-grade acquisitions.
To those looking to broaden their portfolio or initiate an investment in fine wines, Chateau Cos d'Estournel's 2004 vintage offers depth, character, and longevity - three tenets fundamental to the art of wine collection. Within it lies not just a bottle of exquisite Bordeaux blend but a vessel of storied provenance and burgeoning potential. The 2004 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the nose is still very youthful, sporting notions of plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial and Black Forest cake with hints of garrigue, wild sage, charcuterie, black olives and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is generously fruited with bags of earthy and black fruit preserves layers, framed by chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The Wine Advocate, 30 November 2018
This Cos d’Estournel has great potential. The nose has certainly closed down since I last tasted it at en primeur, less floral and more tertiary with a surly broody quality. Cedar and a hint of dark chocolate coming through with aeration, roasted herbs. Very well defined. The full-bodied palate is very tannic structure with a solidity that suggests extended cellaring is mandatory. This Cos d’Estournel is powerful and masculine, yet with wonderful freshness and vitality and a slight savoury tang evolving with further aeration on the persistent finish. Drink 2018-2035+ Tasted November 2008.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Mar 2009
A beautiful example of the vintage, proprietor Michel Reybier and his top-notch winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length, it should be at its finest between 2009 and 2020+. Also tasted: 2004 Les Pagodes de Cos (87)
