The 2007 vintage from Chateau Cos d'Estournel speaks of both defiance and elegance amidst a year that proved challenging for many Bordeaux estates. Intriguing Resilience and Matured Complexity

The 2007 Cos d'Estournel stands as a testament to the mastery behind winemaking in less-than-ideal conditions. The wine reveals how skilled viticulture combined with precise sorting can triumph even when nature presents hurdles. Its composition, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot, exhibits an unexpectedly welcoming maturity—an accessible vintage, inviting fine wine investors to contemplate earlier enjoyment compared to its more robust brethren.

An Investment-Worthy Palette

When assessing this particular offering for wine investment purposes, one is struck by its articulate balance between supple tannins and an enduring structure. The palate is graced with signs of cedary complexity and a soft spice undercurrent that whispers rather than shouts. Layers of dark berries flirt subtly with hints of tobacco and graphite—hallmarks of St-Estephe terroir—crafted diligently into the bottle by Chateau Cos d'Estournel's esteemed winemaking team.

This vintage does not just offer a snapshot into the estate’s prowess; it provides an intriguing option for diversifying one's wine portfolio. Its nuanced profile and readiness to delight in the near term make the 2007 Cos d'Estournel a choice consideration for those looking to smartly navigate the waters of fine wine investing.

In conclusion, while bearing the climatic hallmark of 2007—a vintage demanding resilience—the 2007 Cos d'Estournel emerges as a beacon of achieved potential and captivates with its balance and evolved character. It is one to appreciate as much for what it has become over time as for the mastery it took to reach such a state.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The Cos d’Estournel 2007 does not quite match the promise out of barrel, but Jean-Guillaume has certainly crafted a commendable wine. It displays good lift on the nose with very pure blackberry and raspberry coulis intermixed with graphite, underlying mineralite coming through with aeration. The palate has a peppery entry, fine tannins and good weight, cohesive with lovely ripe tertiary flavours towards the finish. Very fine. Tasted January 2011.

A beautiful wine with 13.4% natural alcohol, this blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of cassis, incense, charcoal, and subtle oak, round, generously endowed flavors, medium to full body, silky tannin, and surprising depth and length. It can be drunk now and over the next 12-15 years.

The 2007 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a deep garnet-brick color and the nose reveals quite a lot of evolution—more than the previous six vintages tasted before it in this tasting—with notes of prunes, figs, chargrill and dried herbs plus hints of raisin cake, leather, balsamic and incense. Medium-bodied, refreshing and mature in the mouth, it delivers a good concentration of savory/spicy flavors and an herbal lift on the finish. It should remain at this evolutionary plateau for the next decade, before it begins to decline.
