2009 Ducru Beaucaillou from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, St-Julien, Bordeaux
The 2009 vintage from Bordeaux is well-known for delivering wines of considerable charm and structure, and the 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou distinctively echoes this sentiment. Having followed the evolution of St-Julien's standout vintages for decades, it is clear that 2009 presents an exceptional chapter in the chateau's storied legacy.
Investment Worthy: A Vintage to Cherish
As investors seek out Bordeaux wines with both pedigree and longevity, the 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou stands prominently. Its careful vinification, coupled with an outstanding season, has culminated in a wine of rare poise – it certainly warrants attention from those looking to broaden their fine wine portfolios. The value of this vintage has steadily increased over time, reflecting its desirability and the finite nature of its existence.
Vintage Specifics: A Reflection of St-Julien's Terroir
Investing in a bottle like the 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou goes beyond mere acquisition; it is an investment in a moment captured in time. The 2009 season blessed St-Julien with near-perfect growing conditions – a mild winter followed by a warm summer, leading to optimal ripeness and concentration within the grapes. This specific year endowed the wine with a profuse bouquet where hints of dark fruits entwine with subtle undertones of violet and tobacco.
The palate is an intricacy of layers – ripe blackberry and cassis notes provide depth balanced against taut tannins and a refined minerality: classic hallmarks of its prestigious terroir. The finish lingers impressively, showcasing an ageing potential that promises to unfold beautifully over time.
In my esteemed experience, a wine such as the 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou merits a position not only in one's cellar but also within the broader context of prudent fine wine investment.

The 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou will eclipse the brilliant wines produced in 2005, 2003 and 2000. It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the 2009. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. Full-bodied and intense with Ducru’s inimitable elegance and purity, it should firm up in the bottle after 7-10 years of cellaring and last for 40-50 years. Magnificent!

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou bursts from the glass with bombastic crème de cassis, black cherry compote and preserved plums notes followed by hints of menthol, hoisin, dusty soil and incense plus fragrant wafts of candied violets and baker’s chocolate. Full bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, the palate offers a beautifully plush texture and bags of freshness, finishing long and layered. An absolute powerhouse!

The purity of fruit is wonderful in this, with plums, currants and hints of fresh mushrooms. Hints of cloves too. Full-bodied, with chewy, creamy tannins and a bright fresh finish. Super energy and intensity. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Better in 2018.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Ducru Beaucaillou ‘09 has a classy, sophisticated bouquet with blackberry, dark plum, and a hint of cassis and oyster shell. It displays fine delineation and composure. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe entry. There is very good weight and structure here, a sense of symmetry and grace that is very appealing. This is one of Bruno Borie’s finest wines ...although I think the 2010 might turn out even better. Tasted January 2013.
