Absolutely spectacular, the1990 Leoville Poyferre is much more evolved than either of its two Leoville neighbors. Its opaque plum/garnet color is accompanied by a gorgeous bouquet of smoke, charcoal, creme de cassis, and flowers. Fleshy and opulent, it comes across like a St.-Julien with a Pomerol texture and allure. This beauty has reached full maturity where it should remain for another two decades. Tasted at a private dinner hosted by The White Club in Basel. The 1990 has always been a bit of a barnstorming Saint Julien and this bottle was a reminder of how great the 1990 vintage can be. It has that luminosity on the nose that implies a rich, decadent, suave bouquet of black cherries, salted liquorice, Hoi Sin and mulberry. The palate displays enormous concentration with layer upon layer of rich, black fruit and (considering the opulence of the wine), impressive mineralite. 'A Shire horse of a wine,' is how I signed off my tasting notes. It will last another 20 years
