A Study in Elegance: The Prodigy of Gevrey-Chambertin

The difficult climatic challenges during the growing season of 2012 somehow contrived to bestow upon this particular expression an attribute of resilience, wrapped in a velvet glove. A lesser ensemble may have faltered under such adversity, but not Domaine Armand Rousseau; characterised by an impeccable lineage, it has once again displayed the aristocratic grace one expects from a name so deeply rooted in the soils of Gevrey-Chambertin.

The 2012 vintage introduces itself with a beguiling nose, an intricate fusion of wild cherries and forest floor, hinting at a wizened Burgundian trait while still in its relative youth. The palate reveals an enviable structure – taut yet mature – showcasing a symphony of blackberries and earthy minerals with an undertone of seasoned oak coaxed out by a sublime ageing process.

The Investment Worthy Heritage

For collectors and investors alike, Rousseau's pedigree is beyond reproach. Their 2012 Charmes-Chambertin stands as a testament to their mastery over their craft, offering an investment piece which marries immediate gratification with potential for storied evolution. This vintage indeed carries the hallmark of its maker's expertise – imparting upon its audience the certainty that what rests within the bottle is not merely wine but bottled poetry.

It is in its sumptuous finish – lingering, wistful – where one is reminded that some wines are not only tasted but experienced. The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin from Domaine Armand Rousseau invites aficionados and novices alike to partake in a narrative woven by time-honoured tradition painted upon the canvas of one challenging year.

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Armand Rousseau has a disjointed nose at first, showing some signs of reduction, although it does coalesce in the glass and offer crushed strawberry and red plum notes, deeply infused with forest floor and mushroom aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like entry, the acidity nicely judged with just a dab of spice towards the finish. It is a charming Charmes-Chambertin, but one that here falls short of my expectations out of barrel, whereas other Rousseau 2012s excel. Possibly this is suffering a dumb phase? I'll hang that question mark against my score.
