By Domaine Armand Rousseau
2014 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Armand Rousseau, Burgundy
An ode to precision and poise, the 2014 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru from the venerable Domaine Armand Rousseau stands as a testament to the prowess of this esteemed producer amidst the challenges of a cool and somewhat demanding vintage. Far beyond the realm of quotidian quaffs, here lies an investment-worthy elixir that offers a cerebral venture for the connoisseur.
A Vintage Sculpted by Mother Nature's Hand
By virtue of 2014's erratic climate, with its tumultuous start yet benevolent ending, the resultant wines demanded a sagacious touch in both vineyard and vat. The balance found in the final blend of this grand cru is therefore not merely fortuitous but rather forged through assiduous stewardship; it sings of Domaine Armand Rousseau's unmatched expertise.
The Defining Essence: Finesse and Structure
Cast a contemplating gaze upon the glass, and find therein an intricate ballet of red fruits enlaced with whispers of sous-bois. Touchstone tannins, neither terse nor timorous, provide an ample spine for years to come. The mineral core — ah, quintessentially Mazis — intimates at a longevity befitting of a Grand Cru stature. Herein you will encounter spices, somehow both assertive and ethereal in their choreography upon the palate, adding to 2014's particular narrative in the tapestry of Burgundy's chronicles.
The discreet use of oak quite ingeniously amplifies rather than masks; nudging forth subtleties amid the folds of fruit and earth—a thoughtful consonance guiding a wine investor's interest towards righteous maturation potential.
Summation of Singular Splendour
In every sip of the 2014 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Armand Rousseau lies a murmured promise: that where there is refinement, there shall be reward. As it pirouettes gracefully into maturity, those who impart fiducial care upon cellaring shall reap the dividends of a Burgundy year marked by adversity yet conquered through artisanal mastery. A paragon among peers, this wine's reticent strength foretells an auspicious ascendancy in the ledger of time-honoured vintages.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Rousseau's 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru has a fruit-driven bouquet laden with black cherries, crushed strawberry, ink and a touch of bay leaf. As it aerates, the fruit seems to take more of a back seat and the terroir comes through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very pure and elegant, iron fist/velvety glove and so forth. This is what a grand cru should be. Utterly seductive and captivating, its satin texture might lure you into opening a bottle too soon. Give it a decade to admire Rousseau at full flight. Tasted September 2017.

The 2014 Mazy Chambertin Grand Cru saw 10% new oak and a touch of reduction appeared to accentuate that. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I like the weight here. There is more body and density than the Charmes-Chambertin, though with the same finesse on the lightly spiced finish. Once the aromatics sort themselves out, this will be a very fine Mazy-Chambertin, though the Charmes has more charm.
