2000 Corton Charlemagne
By Domaine Coche-Dury
2000 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury, Burgundy, France
In an industry often marked by romantic rhetoric surrounding vintages, the millennium year unfailingly stirs a sense of wonder in any oenophile's heart. However, it is with neither hyperbole nor whimsy that I note the 2000 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury as a standout exemplar of both its heritage and era.
Meticulous Maturation: A Testament to Time
The tapestry of climate and care woven throughout 2000 in Burgundy rendered a set of conditions that could only be described as serendipitous, particularly for the Chardonnay gracing the slopes of Corton Hill. The result, in the hands of the acclaimed Domaine Coche-Dury, is an articulate vintage that eloquently expresses the nuances of its terroir while boasting a maturity that belies its years.
A Vintage to Savour and Invest
The nuance in this 2000 Corton Charlemagne conveys itself through a harmonious balance between resolute minerality and an alluring hint of honeyed richness, ensuring its place among prudent wine investment considerations. Its graceful bottle ageing has nurtured the initial vibrant white fruit profiles into sublime whispers amidst broader nutty complexities without losing a drop of their original poise – a metamorphosis made possible only through scrupulous vinification and cellaring.
For those seeking both distinguished drinking and cellar-worthy collectability, this vintage encapsulates why collectors vie for the select offerings from Domaine Coche-Dury. With each glass, one discovers layers — marrying citrus zest with toasted hazelnut and a finish that, like an old friend, lingers long after the conversation has ended.
While there are plentiful options within the scope of high-end white Burgundies, the investment allure and sensory gratification presented by the 2000 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury are palpable. Its profound depth matched by impeccable balance makes it a paragon for Burgundy enthusiasts seeking to diversify their portfolios with a vintage already etched into the annals of fine wine provenance.

The 2000 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is drinking beautifully today, offering up aromas of fresh peach, oatmeal, brioche, vanilla pod and a subtle top note of toasted sesame. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, pure and quite structurally open-knit, with an ample core of succulent, expressive fruit, juicy acids and a pure, bright finish. While 2000 is never going to rank as a historic vintage of Coche’s Corton-Charlemagne, it has the considerable merit of being fully mature and utterly delicious, and it surely ranks among the two or three white Burgundies of the vintage.
