A Vintage With Distinctive Poise

The 2017 vintage was a year of contrasts in Burgundy. Coming off the back of several challenging vintages, it was greeted with relief and anticipation. The weather proved congenial; sufficient warmth and sunshine without the extremes - creating ideal conditions that coaxed out the nuances of Coche-Dury’s highly sought-after Corton Charlemagne. This helped shape a wine that defines elegance and precision while capturing a snapshot of Burgundian opulence.

An Investment-Worthy Expression

Upon sampling, the 2017 Corton Charlemagne reveals itself slowly, with an almost regal restraint. Yet behind its initial modesty lies an intense core of ripe citrus and orchard fruits ensconced in minerality. A harmonious blend of richness and acidity enlivens the palate, suggesting excellent ageing potential – a trait savvy investors might note with interest.

The ageing in oak barrels by Domaine Coche-Dury is masterful, lending whispers of toast and vanilla that marry seamlessly with the vibrant fruit. And while youthfully alluring now, it promises greater opulence with time - tempting collectors aiming to augment their portfolios with vintages boasting significant cellar potential.

In essence, the 2017 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury stands as an exemplary investment wine from Burgundy. Its rarity and anticipated evolution make it a tantalising addition for those curating an illustrious collection where maturity will reveal ever-deeper layers of Burgundian artistry.

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru won't be released for several years—indeed, the 2014 went on the market only a few months ago—but it is already a wine to be eagerly anticipated. Unwinding in the glass with a deep but youthfully reserved bouquet of citrus oil, ripe pear, toasted sesame and smoke, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a muscular, concentrated and tight-knit core and a long, intensely mineral finish. Coche's decision to hold back the wine for several years is to be applauded, because this legend-in-the-making needs and deserves time.
