By Domaine Coche-Dury
2013 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Burgundy, France
In the pantheon of Burgundy whites, the 2013 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon holds a distinctive position, testifying to the resilient character of the vintage. The year 2013 presented vintners with a litany of climatic challenges, ranging from a cool spring to a tempestuous summer. Consequently, these trials have only served to highlight the tenacious spirit and undoubted skills at Lafon. Indeed, it is in such trying years that the true mastery of winemaking is celebrated.
A Vintage Cast in Persistence and Precision
The heralded soils of Goutte d'Or rendered a wine that deftly balances richness with precision – a hallmark of Lafon's adroit touch. In 2013, yields were modest but by no means meagre in quality. The grapes harvested were imbued with concentrated flavours and an energising acidity that now translates into an admirable longevity for investors.
An Artisan’s Touch: Cultivating Exclusivity
The artisanal approach at Domaine des Comtes Lafon, coupled with their scrupulous attention to biodynamic principles, proves itself once more within this noble vintage. 2013 was not a year for the faint-hearted viticulturist, and it's precisely such rigor in the fields that has sculpted a Meursault of fine distinction.
On the palate, one encounters initial notes of toasted hazelnuts and ripe Anjou pear that evolve into a symphony of citrus zest and wet stone minerality, leading to an elegantly drawn-out finish. Such is the opulent tapestry weaved by this exceptional bottle.
For the discerning investor, awareness of good vintage differentiation is essential. The 2013 Meursault Goutte d'Or possesses an austerity and vigour that may outpace other years renowned for their exuberance. As this vintage marches steadfastly into its optimal drinking window, its rarity and singular expression should command respectful attention among portfolios with an eye on gradual maturation and appreciable value.
Exquisite Complexity: A Benchmark Investment Wine
The 2013 Meursault Goutte d'Or by Domaine des Comtes Lafon emerges as an exquisite testament to Burgundian resilience and complexity – an ode to a demanding but ultimately rewarding vintage. Its poised evolution in bottle underscores it as one of the more intriguing investment opportunities for connoisseurs and collectors seeking wines with storied provenance matched by impeccable refinement.

The 2013 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignieres felt just a little reduced on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, although it opens nicely with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with precise acidity. It feels like a harmonious and a "laid back" Puligny-Montrachet with crisp lime and Granny Smith apples furnishing the finish. There is nothing gung-ho about this Puligny – more a wine content in its own skin.
