The elegance of Burgundy shines brightest when a vintage distinctly reflects the subtleties of its terroir. The Vintage's Quandary: A Dance with the Elements
As a fine wine investment critic, it is my delight to recall 1999 as one of those years that teetered precariously between tribulation and triumph. The season commenced with unusual warmth, coaxing the vines into an early budburst. Nature's unpredictability ensued with a temperamental summer, ultimately bestowing upon us grapes of optimal maturity come harvest. This unique sequence of events is woven into the very essence of this Premier Cru.
A Terroir’s Whisper in Every Sip
The 1999 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru captures a snapshot of its birth-year with great fidelity. On the palate, '99 offers a testimony to the winemaker’s deft interplay with structure and finesse at Domaine Comte de Vogue. Intricate notes of black cherries and ripe strawberries meet a bouquet seasoned by earth and delicate spice. Assuredly, age has been its benevolent companion, gifting it with softened tannins that suggest a presence as subtle as Chambolle's characteristic silk.
Investment-wise, this ethereal creation dances within the realm of appreciating assets. Its pedigree from Domaine Comte de Vogue assures its position amongst notable collections, while its singular reflection of 1999 solidifies its desirability for connoisseurs seeking out wines with stories anchored in time.
In sum, the 1999 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru from Domaine Comte de Vogue stands as an articulate emissary of Burgundy’s climatic narrative for that year. Its poise on the palate belies the hidden struggles of its vintage – a testament to the resilience and adaptability intrinsic to some of Burgundy’s most cherished parcels. For those seeking investment opportunities or simply wish to grace their cellars with a compelling vintage, this wine encapsulates both potential growth and immediate gratification.

The Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru 1999 is deep in color. It has a lovely savory bouquet with hints of Italian cured meats and bacon fat intermingling with briary scents, all with really impressive intensity. The palate is full-bodied and well balanced. There is clearly a bit of sinew here. Truffle and sappy black fruit form the second half with a saline note urging another sip toward the finish. This punches above my expectations, though I would be tempted to keep bottles down in the bunker for another three or four years. Like many 1999s, this is in for the long haul.
