By Domaine de la Romanee-Conti
1995 La Tache from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Burgundy, France
The 1995 vintage in Burgundy was a year that tested the mettle of vinters, yielding to a harvest that proved to be anything but ordinary. In the hands of the sterling winemakers at Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, the year's challenging conditions were transcended into a stand-out offering; the 1995 La Tache is a testament to such transcendent craftsmanship.
Terroir and Time: A Convergence of Elegance
Situated in the hallowed grounds of Vosne-Romanée, the La Tache vineyard's deep-rooted vines grappled with the year's climatic whims, deftly converting adversity into complexity. These convolutions are present in every sinew of this vintage, intertwined with an aromatic kaleidoscope unique to this harvest.
A Vintage Unveiling Refined Strength
The 1995 La Tache presents a dazzling bouquet befitting its heritage—wild cherries and blackcurrants with a refined base note of earthy truffles, indicative of La Tache's exalted terroir. What sets this vintage apart is its structured tannins that lend an architectural ethos to the velvety palate, masterfully assembled to project both power and poise. With age, the wine has unfurled into a complex display of flavours; spicy undertones mingle with ethereal floral notes synonymous with Pinot Noir's varietal finesse.
The performance on the palate is reminiscent of a symphony orchestra—a seamless integration where each sip leads with density but finishes with an ephemeral grace only matured wines like the 1995 La Tache can impart.
In summing up this formidable expression from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, investment considerations align poignantly with aesthetics. The 1995 La Tache stands as an illustrious example, encapsulating the virtues of its vintage. It is for those collectors seeking to diversify their portfolio while endowing it with a wine that has ascended to its plateau of maturity—a desirable juxtaposition for the fine wine connoisseur.

This wine is mind-boggling and has gathered even more body, power, and density than it displayed from barrel. It is intensely profound, and super-ripe yet harmonious. Its extraordinarily long finish (it tails off with a sweet kirsch kiss) flabbergasted me. I could not help but think of the finishes of two wines I love - Chateau Rayas and Chateau Lafleur. It appears to be holding an enormous amount in reserve, and may ultimately merit higher ratings. It should be held at least ten years, and will easily last through 2020 given proper cellar conditions. Bravo! Importer: Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, CA; tel. (707) 963-9661.
