By Domaine de la Romanee-Conti

2017 Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Burgundy, France

The constellation of exclamatory vintages from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is a celestial docket where each year is a luminary in its own right. The 2017 vintage attains a singular patina of mystique; a narrative woven of Burgundian traditions and the whims of climatic fates.

A Miraculous Harvest and the Artistry of Patience

Upon reflection, the 2017 vintage for Burgundy was an omen of hope after several years beset with climatic adversities. The season unfurled with unexpected clemency, bypassing the feared frosts and derailing diluvian concerns. This relative serendipity in weather carved space for optimal phenolic development in the iconic vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

The resulting 2017 Romanée-Conti is a testament to the artisanal ethos that strokes every cluster of grapes—with ethereal layers embodying the lighter touch of the year. Here lies a wine that beguiles with red fruit archetypes steeped in an elixir of floral velvet, pinpoints of spice, and finely threaded tannins—rising to an impeccable balance on the palate.

Ephemeral Opulence Woven with Terroir

The 2017 Romanée-Conti upholds its revered lineage with grace, while also marking its terrain through its unique vintage traits. With piquant acidity underwriting a more immediate appeal, investors will find this iteration approaches conviviality earlier than its forebearers. A marriage of fruit purity and aromatic complexity positions it as not merely a bottle for a collector’s sanctum but also a treasure ready to unfurl its splendour on earlier occasions.

Whilst one might be swayed to vivify this nascent ambrosia promptly, patience allows the orchestration of its elements to achieve a crescendo. Thus, as an article of investment, one not only holds a fragment of terroir-driven majesty but also a promise of future revelations. This makes the 2017 Romanée-Conti an investable bijou—an artwork in time that will find its highest expression through measured anticipation.

In sum, the conversation around this rarity gracefully pivots not around if one should invest but when to partake—a delightful conundrum wrapped in the enigma that is the 2017 Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Wafting from the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dark wild berries, cassis, wilted rose petals, blood orange, exotic spices, licorice and coniferous forest floor, the 2017 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is full-bodied, satiny textured and multidimensional. It's just as powerful as this year's La Tâche but even more elegantly framed by filigree structure, concluding with an intensely sapid and penetratingly fragrant finish. Pristinely balanced, this young Romanée-Conti possesses huge reserves for the long haul despite its deceptively supple youthful appeal, and it will reward extended bottle age.

The 2017 Corton Grand Cru is performing beautifully from bottle, bursting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of peonies, rose hips, sweet red berries, orange rind, spices and subtle soil tones. On the palate, the wine medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with succulent acids, good concentration and a long, exquisitely perfumed finish. Indeed, it's only by comparison with the domaine's utterly suave wines from Vosne-Romanée later in the tasting that this Corton's tannins seem comparatively coarse-grained. Picked on September 4th, it is showing appreciably better than it did when I tasted it from tank before bottling last year.
