2009 Clos de la Roche

By Domaine Dujac

2009 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac, Burgundy, France

A decade deep into its journey, the 2009 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac is a brilliant exemplar of the wondrous alchemy between a superb Burgundian terroir and a vintage's climatic grace. The 2009 vintage was one of contemplative warmth in Burgundy, fostering an early bloom and prompt maturation that challenged vignerons to capture the season’s exuberance without forfeiting finesse.

Vintage Virtuosity: A Patina of Elegance

Domaine Dujac, a standard-bearer of precision viticulture and terroir-driven vinification in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, has harnessed this vintage's affable climate to cultivate a Clos de la Roche that sings with intense cherry red hues and an expressive nose redolent of ripe fruits intertwined with earthen spice. On the palate, this Grand Cru beguiles with silken tannins harmonised with remarkable depth and complexity that indicate impeccable ageing potential—a keystone for fine wine investors who crave wines that mature with both dignity and vigour.

Balancing Act: Prism of Potential

The balance struck in the 2009 season—cajoling opulence without overshadowing the subtleties of each vineyard's voice—manifests in this wine's texture. It is plush yet discerning, swathed in black fruits tempered by an almost ineffable savoury character that suggests whispers of forest floor after rainfall. The finish is enduring, reminiscent of the long, sunlit days that graced Burgundy during that growing season.

With ten years of repose, the 2009 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac has embarked on a beautiful evolution, one that promises to unfurl further nuances for those patient enough to allow this gem to continue mellowing in their cellars. As investment pieces go, it thrives at the intersection of earnest appreciation and astute acquisition.

In summary, this particular vintage stands as a testament to what can be achieved when prowess and providence collide—offering not just a liquid narrative to connoisseurs but also a storied addition to any sophisticated portfolio, which could humbly elevate any collection.

The 2009 Clos de la Roche wafts from the glass with hints of tobacco, wild flowers and cherries. This is an elegant, refined Clos de la Roche long on finesse and pure sensuality. The gorgeous, finely-knit finish leaves a lasting impression. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. My tasting at Dujac was one of the highlights of the two weeks I spent in Burgundy in late November/early December 2011. I tasted through all the 2010s in barrel and 2009s in bottle. The domaine’s 2009s are among the wines of the vintage. Importers: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (415) 491-4724; Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel.
