A Study in Depth and Complexity

Examining the 1995 vintage through a precise lens, it is clear that the Echezeaux from Domaine Dujac has developed into a beacon of sophistication. One is immediately enticed by the deep garnet hue, which suggests not only longevity but also a wine that has evolved splendidly within the bottle's crystalline confines. The nose is a rapture of dark cherries and earthy truffles, intertwined with whispers of tertiary aromas exemplified by hints of leather and game.

On the palate, this vintage impresses with its harmonious balance. The ripeness of fruit achieved during '95 carries through to offer sumptuous layers of red and black berries. A subtle underpinning of oak delivers a dash of spice, while refined tannins weave their way through an expanse of silky texture. It is the quintessence of well-judged ageing; the integration is seamless, producing a finish that is both lingering and laden with nuance.

Dujac's light-colored wines are a testament to how much punch a deceptively shallow-looking Pinot Noir can deliver. The medium ruby-colored Echezeaux displays sweet, plummy fruits in the nose and an extremely refined, silky-textured, violet and cherry-filled, beautifully intense flavor profile. Elegant, this delicate gem should be at its best between 2004-2012. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29.
