2010 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques from Domaine Fourrier, Burgundy, France
In the pantheon of Burgundy's most celebrated wines, the 2010 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques from Domaine Fourrier stands out as a paragon of viticultural mastery and enological enchantment. This exceptional vintage ranks consistently amongst the finest, drawing the connoisseur into its complex narrative shaped by the interplay of climate and terroir.
Exquisite Harmony: A Confluence of Season and Soil
The 2010 vintage in Clos St Jacques presents itself with a particularly striking poise that mirrors the season's conducive climatic conditions. The early months provided adequate winter cold, fostering a fine start for vine dormancy and subsequent growth cycles. As spring burgeoned, so did the vines, all under an auspicious mix of temperate sunshine and rain - nature's tender calibration that encouraged impeccable fruit development. Summer followed suit with moderate warmth, punctuated by timely rainfall, culminating in an autumn harvest window that opened under clear skies, ensuring healthy, optimally ripened grapes. Unlike its immediate predecessors, which faced their own unique climatic blessings and challenges, 2010 shines with an equilibrium often craved but seldom achieved in Burgundy.
Domaine Fourrier's tenure over these prized parcels within Gevrey Chambertin reveals new dimensions with this vintage. The deft nurturing by Jean-Marie Fourrier, scion of a revered winemaking lineage, is tasted in each sip – from the expressive bouquet abloom with red cherry tartness and hints of earthy forest floor to the silk-rendered tannins that speak of reverence for traditional vinification methods paired judiciously with modernity.
For investors seeking wines with accruing value and undeniable allure, 2010 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques from Domaine Fourrier is one to watch. The wine's structure suggests a longevity that will reward patience while already showing signs of the intriguing complexities sought after by Burgundy aficionados around the world

The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques comes across as quite feminine in this vintage. Graphite, dark red berries, plums and licorice are all woven together gracefully in this expressive, impeccable wine. The tannins show a satin-like finesse that is striking. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. The biggest news at Domaine Fourrier is Jean-Marie Fourrier’s decision to launch a small negociant operation to augment his estate wines. Readers can look forward to new bottlings from the 1er Cru Aux Exchanges in Chambolle-Musigny and two new Grand Cru wines from Clos de Vougeot and Echezeaux, all of which will debut with the 2011 vintage. As for 2010, Fourrier told me he is down 40% across the board in terms of yields. The cold weather during the flowering produced 100% millerandage (shot berries), which Fourrier described as pea-sized grapes. While that is not good for quantity, it has certainly turned out great for quality. Readers who want to learn more about Fourrier’s thoughts on the vintage and approach to vinification might want to check out my video interview on www.erobertparker.com. As a quick note, none of the 2010s had been racked at the time of my visit in early December 2011. I have kept scores a bit wider than normal in the few cases where the wines were a touch reduced.
