2013 Ruchottes Chambertin
By Domaine Georges Roumier
2013 Ruchottes Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier, Burgundy, France
The narrative of the 2013 vintage in Burgundy is one of overcoming adversities – a late bloom due to a cool spring followed by a challenging summer. However, such years often draw out the resilient spirit of the finest terroirs, and the 2013 Ruchottes Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier is a testament to this phenomenon.
Resiliency Turned into Refinement
Domaine Georges Roumier, an emblematic figure of Chambertin, shows its mettle with this vintage. Amidst hailstorms and fluctuating weather conditions, the 2013 vintage entered its harvest stage not just unscathed but with a character all its own. Less opulent than some of its predecessors, it boasts an enigmatic charm – a finely etched structure supporting a nuanced bouquet that speaks volumes of atmospheric tensions transformed into olfactory excellence.
A Vintage Defined by Detail
Firm yet with yielding tannins, the 2013 Ruchottes Chambertin unravels layers of red and black fruit interlaced with earthy undertones and a whisper of spice. Its moderate alcohol content should not be mistaken for timidity; instead, it orchestrates a balance between intensity and precision, leaving an indelibly elegant finish on the palate.
Investors seeking wines with distinctive stories will find an ally in this vintage. Not only does it showcase Domaine Georges Roumier's ability to craft wines that echo Burgundy's idiosyncratic climate twists, but it also promises exemplary longevity, maturing gracefully under precise cellaring conditions.
In summary, the 2013 Ruchottes Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier comes forward as a survivor of Burgundy's climatic rollercoaster, merging understated power with finesse. It is this spirited resilience that makes it a compelling addition to any fine wine investment portfolio. As it continues to unfold, it bears watching – much like the region’s weather itself – for those unexpected moments of brilliance.

Scores and tasting notes
Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Christophe Roumier has a simpler bouquet than its peers: a little reduced to contend with, later sea spray and iodine scents infusing the tightly wound brambly red fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, moderate acidity, quite dense though it feels a little "pushed" at the moment, has not quite settled into its groove. I would hope to see more nuance develop in bottle as it was outclassed by Mugneret-Gibourg's own 2013 Ruchottes-Chambertin here. Tasted September 2016.
