A Vintage Shaped by Extremes

The 2003 vintage, notorious for its scorching European summer, provoked trepidation among vigneron and critic. Yet, the resilience of Burgundy's terroir and the mastery of Domaine Leroy coalesced to craft a wine that defies the year's challenges. The hallmark finesse usually associated with Clos de Vougeot is underpinned here by a luscious density of fruit, unusual yet thrilling for this lieu-dit.

Layered Complexity Enshrouded by Elegance

On uncorking, one is captured instantly by a heady bouquet—smoked cherries and aged leather interweave with subtle whispers of forest floor and truffle. On the palate, the 2003 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy unveils layer upon layer: sun-warmed plum and black currant enlivened by a seam of minerality so often eclipsed in such a riper vintage. The finish—impossibly long, an ode to its stately ancestry—leaves one in meditative appreciation.

The formidable structure hints at an ageing potential that promises further complexity for those who counsel patience in their investment. In the arena of fine wines, where the interplay of rarity and desirability dictates the rhythm, this vintage courts attention not only as a sensory delight but as a savvy addition to one's portfolio.

Concluding Reflections on a Remarkable Vintage

For investors in search of a wine that commemorates such a distinctive year, the 2003 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy represents a poignant narrative in every glass – a climactic vintage that has been tamed and elevated by human craft to emerge as a true enigma of its time.

The 2003 Clos Vougeot comes forth with unreal aromas of mocha-laced black cherries, chocolate-drenched plums, and candied blackberries. Full-bodied, immensely concentrated, and deep, this broad, bulky, powerful wine is jam-packed with black chocolate, red as well as black cherries, licorice and tar. Loads of solid yet ripe tannin provide this dense blockbuster with ample structure, detectable in its interminable finish. It will require cellaring to civilize its weighty, graceless nature.
