The Quintessence of Poise: 2014 in Review

While Burgundy often plays host to climatic capriciousness, 2014 was a year that, despite its challenges, managed to carve out its niche in viticultural lore with poise and resilience. A cool start to the growing season saw a judicious, temperate summer that allowed for an unhurried ripening. Hailstorms had left their mark in previous years; fortunately, 2014 was spared such reckoning. Consequently, the harvest yielded fruit that encapsulated the best virtues of balance—ripe, but not overwrought; structured, but pliant.

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Combottes has a focused, slightly more introspective bouquet at the moment: dark red fruit, a little briary and cold stone scents. The palate is where it is all happening...filigree tannin, tensile and full of nervosité, unapologetically linear and focused, a Gevrey that demands to be taken seriously with an intense, slightly saline, wonderfully detailed finish that lingers long in the mouth. Superb.
