The prowess of the 2002 vintage in Burgundy is on splendid display in the formidable 2002 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy. This year is often overshadowed by the heralded 2005, but connoisseurs who have journeyed with Burgundy through its annual permutations recognise that 2002 was a year where nature conspired to grace the vignerons with a near-perfect growing season. Moderation was the theme – neither too hot nor too cold, with precisely timed rains – leading to a harvest of impeccable quality.

Elegance and Intensity: A Richebourg Revelation

The much-vaunted wines from Domaine Leroy are emblematic of Burgundy's prowess in executing balance and profundity. The 2002 vintage, in particular, enchanted the senses with a subtler yet deep narrative compared to its successors. In a symphony of earth and fruit, this expression is anchored firmly in its venerable terroir while presenting a myriad of olfactory pleasures: black cherries, autumnal undergrowth, and an intoxicating swathe of spice.

A Vintage Worth Its Terroir

The palate experience echoes this aromatic complexity, unveiling layers of flavour with each reverential sip. Precision is key here – nothing is overplayed. The tannins possess the character of woven silk – substantial yet seamless – escorting waves of dark berry fruits, a touch of leather and a minerality that speaks directly of Richebourg's distinguished soils.

Savvy investors delight; the conversation around the 2002 Richebourg Grand Cru is one imbued with awe for its poise in evolution. The collector will note that such graceful ageing potential adds considerable allure to an already coveted investment asset.

In summing up, the 2002 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy stands as an exemplary chronicle of its year. It complements intricate knowledge of Burgundian wine investment and serves as a testament to the lasting elegance that well-advised acquisitions can unlock. This vintage finds harmony in maturity, suggesting both drinking pleasure and investment wisdom can be one and the same.

The 2002 Richebourg Grand Cru must surely be Lalou Bize-Leroy's finest wine of the vintage. It has more class than the 2002 Latricières-Chambertin--pure wild strawberry and black truffle on the nose that gathers momentum with each ticking hand of the clock as if to say: "You want more?" Of course you do. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is great depth here as one expects from a Richebourg, not a powerful grand cru because this vintage was all about the nuance and delicacy, but it fans out wondrously on the finish with crushed strawberry and hints of cured meats. Very long, very elegant, very Leroy. This is an absolute treat. Tasted January 2016.
