2001 Richebourg

By Domaine Meo-Camuzet

2001 Richebourg from Domaine Meo-Camuzet, Burgundy, France

An exemplar of finesse and aristocratic elegance, the 2001 Richebourg from Domaine Meo-Camuzet is a testament to the graceful aging potential of great Burgundy. The year 2001 was marked by a climatic balancing act in Burgundy—higher than average rainfall in August followed by a saving grace of a dry September, which bestowed upon the Vosne-Romanée a remarkably unique harvest.

Distinctive Features of the 2001 Vintage

This elixir holds within its ruby depths the whispers of that year's climatic dance—initial concern giving way to relief and triumph in the quality of fruit brought to bear. The yield at Domaine Meo-Camuzet was tempered by nature's hand leading to a concentration of flavours that anchors this wine's signature character. The deft winemaking then coaxed out the intricate lacework of aromas that define Richebourg.

The ’01 Richebourg, now at its zenith after two decades, radiates with ripe black cherries and nuanced hints of truffle and sous-bois, the quintessence of its terroir. A wine that rewards those who wait; investors will find it has transcended the bounds of ephemeral fancies to become a soul-stirring experience—one that carries both emotion and a mature wisdom.

A Vintage for Connoisseurs and Investors Alike

Parsing through its depth on the palate reveals an intoxicating complexity; subtle earthiness layers over vibrant red fruit, nestled within supple tannins—a product of the vintage’s benevolent autumnnal grace period. It’s an investment both financial and sensory; the 2001 Richebourg from Domaine Meo-Camuzet invites aficionados to ponder over its evolution, richly rewarding patience.

Kudos to Domaine Meo-Camuzet for interpreting and harnessing such nuanced conditions into this masterpiece. As an emblematic vintage offering from one of Burgundy's prestigious Grand Crus, this Richebourg is an admirable addition to any discerning investor's collection.

Concluding Notes on the 2001 Richebourg

Spanning 40 years, I have seen few vintages challenge and charm in equal measure as the 2001, and fewer still rise to become iconic collectables. The 2001 Richebourg from Domaine Meo-Camuzet encapsulates this paradigm—an enduring example that will continue to allure connoisseurs with its enchanting narrative locked within each bottle, encapsulating investment-worthiness with every sip.

Medium to dark ruby-colored, the 2001 Richebourg is an intense, deep offering armed with huge concentration and an extraordinarily long finish. Its dense layers of black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and spices conquer the taster’s palate. This regal wine should be drunk between 2006 and 2015. According to Jean-Nicolas Meo, this estate’s director and winemaker, “2001 is a good vintage, more strict and severe than 1999 and 2000, with more acidity and bite, less fat, and more austere. It has good cellaring potential because the balance of the wines is excellent.” Meo’s 2001s were particularly successful, with fleshy, fruit-filled personalities. For the most part, the firm, rustic tannin found in many of his colleagues’ 2001s (the majority of which are not recommended) was not detected in any of his offerings. That may be because Meo waited longer to harvest (as he states), extracted more delicately, or because he’s one of the few Burgundians to stir the lees of his reds (which builds flesh)... or a combination of the three.
