2001 Barbaresco DOCG by Gaja, Piedmont, Italy
The 2001 Barbaresco DOCG from Gaja is a mesmerising performance that unerringly captures the stylistic idiosyncrasies of its eponymous vintage. This unforgettably symphonic meld of fine wines from Italy undeniably asserts itself as an investment-worthy expression in every discerning oenophile's portfolio.
A Class Apart: An analysis of the 2001 vintage
Distinct from Gaja's other vintages, the 2001 Barbaresco DOCG is defined by its profound depth and intricate character inherited from the remarkable climatic conditions of that year. The radiant warmth and residual moisture nurtured by the region's terroir moulded an indelible imprint on this wine, resulting in it exhibiting a remarkable complexity that continues to unfold with each passing year.
Embrace the rich, densely layered taste woven with vivacious dark cherry flavours punctuated by an illustrious weave of spice. A whiff delivers an ethereal bouquet of truffle-infused earthiness intermingled with nuances of dried rose petals. Tannins still pronounced, but well integrated, serve as a testament to the wine’s ageing potential and demonstrate make it an excellent choice for those looking to invest in fine Italian wines.
Bathed in Sunshine, Steeped in Legacy
The 2001 vintage was bathed in a gentle sunshine and sprinkled by adequately balanced rainfall, setting an ideal stage for producing this masterpiece. This wine resonates with the legacy of Gaja's expert craftsmanship, and reflects an unerring commitment to enhance nature's raw produce through artful winemaking.
Intriguingly, this Barbaresco appears to inject a vibrance akin to immortality within its liquid script, with the tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco and underbrush continuing to emerge as it gracefully ages. Its characteristically stern, regal structure is perfectly balanced with an elegant undertone.
Indeed, Gaja's 2001 Barbaresco DOCG not only serves as an unquestionable demonstration of the exceptionalities that the year brought forth but also leaves an indelible mark within the annals of Piedmont's winemaking history. Remarkably corporeal yet delightfully ethereal in its embrace, it undeniably merits a venerable place in any discerning wine investor's selection.

Scores and tasting notes
The 2001 Barbaresco is gorgeous. Sweet balsamic notes open on the bouquet, followed intense, silky layers of fruit. The 2001 is subtle, classy and elegant from start to finish. Hints of early maturity appear in the aromatics, but the wine has more than enough fruit to support at least another decade of fine drinking. Tobacco, sweet herbs and licorice add the final notes of complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. Angelo Gaja isn’t the talkative type too often these days. Most of the time I am greeted, left alone in a room to taste, and then greeted again before I leave. On this day, though, Gaja started talking about vintages, and in particular the misconception that wines from hot years don’t age. Gaja cited 1961, a warm year in Piedmont, and one of the most legendary at the time. The wines aged just fine, added Gaja. What struck me most, though, was how clear Gaja’s recollection was of events that transpired fifty years ago. I know only one other person in Piedmont who has a similarly sharp memory that goes that far back. What does that have to do with these 2001s? Not much, except that it seemed like an interesting anecdote to share. Importer: Terlato Wines International, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604 8900
